Art Department

Bethany’s Art Department provides various art related groups and individual sessions to youth who reside at Bethany. Youth have the opportunity to choose from Pottery, Fused Glass, Paintings, Mixed Media projects and more.

In addition to relaxation, creativity, and skill building components of the Art Department, youth are allowed to explore emotions and current life events and develop coping skills.

Our youth create fused-glass pieces and painted tiles for our special events, allowing us to share their talents with our wonderful donors and supporters.

Our pottery group begins with entry-level clay building skills such as pinch pots, coil, and slab built pottery. After youth learn the basic techniques, they are introduced to both wheel throwing possibilities and the creation of clay sculptures. All youth artwork is fired and glazed with the opportunity to experiment with various glazing techniques.

Fused Glass

Fused Glass

Our fused glass group focuses on basic kiln formed fused glass pieces. Youth begin by making sets of coasters to learn how the glass melts and reacts in the kiln. They then progress to larger pieces such as bowls, wall plaques, and vases. Youth learn the process of fusing and slumping to bring their design ideas to full creation.

Our painting group focuses on the fundamentals of acrylic, watercolor, and ink painting. Youth are taught and encouraged to express themselves through both representational and abstract painting. In addition, they have the opportunity to learn the techniques of Plein Air painting, the act of painting outside. Youth are also frequently given the opportunity to showcase their work.

Mixed Media

Mixed Media

Our mixed media group combines painting, drawing, collage, and crafts. This group encourages youth to try different mediums to create various projects. We use anything from more typical art mediums such as acrylic paint, watercolors, and oil and chalk pastels, to non-traditional mediums to create texture and add interest to the pieces.
